Educational and Fun go hand in hand: This Montessori set combines a matching and sorting game designed to develop visual perception and colour identification skills. It helps refine and advance the child’s colour identification skills into colour discrimination skills, by using the subtle differences in the shades on the colour slides to differentiate.
This typically Montessori material encourages sensory refinement by teaching the child to detect similarities and differences visually by matching the colours of the slides to the skittles and thus also develops eye muscle sense.
The items of this set engage both tactile and visual sensory input and are an excellent way to introduce new vocabulary by teaching the child the names and shades of the different colours and how to use descriptive language to describe them. By using their hands to sort and by handling real objects, instead of looking at pictures, the child is engaged and this is much more beneficial for all-around learning.
Sorting is a beginning maths skill, teaching children the similarities or differences between objects and how to group similar or dissimilar objects. By sorting, children start learning basic numerical concepts that develop into grouping of numbers as they get older. It is a very good starting point.
Children have a natural desire to create order and make sense of their world, a place which seems largely out of their control. This Montessori set gives them a sense of purpose and a feeling of capability by being in control of what colours go where.
The colour sorting task also teaches logical thinking by using comparison and contrast. It also teaches the child self-correction Montessori principle (Control of Error) as they are able to see for themselves when the colours don’t match up. This also helps the child to develop decision making skills as they are the ones who get to decide what colour goes where. This gives them a sense of self-confidence and achievement.
Why buy this item: Children can begin with these Montessori items from as early as 2 years of age and continue with it until their skills are refined.
Children will be attracted by the bright colours and challenge of the items and feel a sense of achievement on successful completion of the task. It is a fun-learning skill using visual and tactile senses but in a way that’s more of a game than work.
It is a fun exercise that can be used in the home or at school as a Montessori activity disguised in a game.
Children will go back to this task again and again to re-feel the sense of achievement and satisfaction they get from completing the task successfully.
